bite + sip : summer mocktails

bite + sip : summer mocktails | unruly things

summertime is that time of year that I especially enjoy an afternoon cocktail on the deck or an ice cold beer in the hammock. since I’m pregnant, I’ve been whipping up some fancy mocktails in lieu of an alcoholic drink and I’ve made some pretty delicious ones. my go-to these days simply fizzy water with sliced limes and oranges, but these have caught my eye.

do you have any favorite non-alcoholic summer sippers? I’d love to know.

Love this! I’m not a drinker, so I often feel a bit left out. These recipes are a super idea! Thank you

Yes, we totally do mocktails! My husband and I always want something herbal, interesting, effervescent to drink the evenings, but we have also been cutting way down on our alcohol intake. Here are four of our favorites!

Whole Foods’ Mint flavor sparkling mineral water + orange bitters (okay, so there’s a little alcohol in bitters, but I’m assuming that 4-5 drops is a completely negligible amount of alcohol)

Lavender Dry Soda + Dr. Adam Elmegirab’s “Teapot” bitters (incredible combo – light, floral and sweet somehow – this is the perfect choice when you are craving something like St. Germain)

For a virgin Dark & Stormy, combine good ginger ale (I like Reed’s Extra Ginger Brew) with the juice of 1/2-1 lime and 1-2 Tbl blackstrap molasses (start with 1 and add more if you like a stronger molasses flavor). I use blackstrap because my favorite rum for a traditional Dark and Stormy is Cruzan’s Blackstrap rum, but you could use something lighter if you don’t like the earthy herbal quality of blackstrap; either way, this virgin cocktail does a really good job of passing for the original!

And then there’s the old favorite, the carrot-ginger elixir:
