while we were enjoying the sun in the Philippines, I asked a few of my favorite ladies to contribute a guest post for Unruly Things.  even though we’re back, I’ve got another great post to share with you.  it’s from Wreckless’s Kristy Behrs and it’s all about thrifting.

Incredible treasures and inexpensive price tags — this dynamic duo is what makes thrift shopping enjoyable and affordable. And let’s not forget, the hunt for these gems is almost as exciting and amazing as the gems themselves! My wardrobe is 90% thrifted and 10% investment items I can’t or wouldn’t purchase secondhand (undergarments, running shoes, and a parka). For most, and at first, thrifting can be intimidating and overwhelming, especially when you don’t have a mentor well-versed in culling through previously worn garments and hunting for old or used treasures. My wardrobe and lifestyle transformation didn’t happen overnight and there are a few helpful rhythms I learned along the way:

guest post : bite + sip – the bloody mary

while my family and I are enjoying fun in the sun in the Philippines, I’ve asked a few of my favorite ladies to contribute a little guest post for Unruly Things. this one is a really yummy one from my pal, Anne Parker.

Chances are good that if you invite me to brunch at your house, I’ll bring Bloody Marys. Typically this is met with enthusiasm, but tomato-based drinks are sometimes divisive: either you love them or you hate them. I’ll assume, like me, you love them.

When I was thinking about what to write about for Unruly Things, I looked back through my Instagram feed for inspiration. One of the recurring themes was posts of different Bloody Marys I’ve made. Once strangers started commenting on the frequency in which I drink them, I realized that my love for a good Bloody Mary may be a little over the top.

Over the years I’ve perfected my recipe. Friends have asked for it, and up until this point I’ve kept quiet. If I’m going to share it, why not let everyone know, right? It’s very simple and straightforward – there’s no need for it to be too complicated.

ingredients

Ingredients:
1 32oz bottle of tomato juice
2 lemons, juiced
2 tablespoons freshly grated or prepared horseradish
1 ½ tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons celery salt
1 teaspoon dried dill weed
¼ teaspoon cumin
Vodka
Pickled vegetables for garnish
Ice

Directions:
1. Mix all the ingredients except vodka together in a large bowl. Whisk well.
2. Using the juiced lemon, wet the rim of the glass. Use celery salt to salt the rim.
3. Add ice to the glass, then mix one part vodka to three parts tomato juice mix.
4. Garnish with as many pickled vegetables as you can fit on a toothpick!

Makes enough to share with all your friends.

while my family and I are enjoying fun in the sun in the Philippines, I’ve asked a few of my favorite ladies to contribute a little guest post for Unruly Things.  here’s some beautiful inspiration from Kim of Ethanollie and Maven Collective. 

Having lived in the Pacific Northwest for less than two years, I have not grown accustomed to the forever winters that seem to stretch until summer, somehow rendering all signs of spring invisible.  In my former home in the Northeast we had long, cold winters.  But Spring, though short lived, was grand…my favorite time of year.  I don’t yet have a yard to call my own, but I dream of the day that I do, and of filling it with all the spring bulbs, ephemerals and early perennials it can bear.

Until then, I fill my windowsills with green…cactus, dracena, succulents and ferns.  I am going to try my hand at a small indoor bog garden this year, and maybe a small fruit tree once the weather turns.  Until then…here are some pretty plant photos that leave me weak in the knees…spare, a little sun starved, but all the better for it.  I’m wishing an early spring on everyone…wherever you are!

I’ve been working on this particular mix for quite a while, an ever-evolving collection of songs I put on to relax a bit to – whether it be while working or just hanging out at home.
