paperless post holiday cards

Paperless Post PAPER Holiday Cards : photo by Alyson Brown for Unruly Things

this year we used Paperless Post for our holiday cards and they turned out really great. I had a really hard time choosing just one style of card so we ended up with two different ones. {so I’m not totally blowing it by showing family this little peek here!} I’ve been enjoying taking pics of my boys so rather than booking a family photoshoot, I decided to take a stab at it by myself. what you don’t see are the out takes, which were a pretty hilarious combo of pouting and crying and goofy faces. but this photo, the one good one from about 50 pictures I took of them, turned out so good.

Paperless Post is pretty great. you can send out ONLINE versions of your cards to your email contacts if you’d rather go the green route and be truly paperless. but if you enjoy the actual paper cards, check out their PAPER line. bonus : if you haven’t sent out your cards yet, or your one of those families that typically procrastinates, like me, and sends out New Years cards, you can save 20% off PAPER through December 25 with the code HOLLYDAYS. check out their beautiful cards and have fun designing!

right this second… merry merry + family photos

family photos by Wreckless for Alyson Brown, Unruly Things

last weekend, we bundled up and headed to mountains for a little family photo session with my friend Kristy from Wreckless.  I just adore her so much and her photography is the best!  having family photos like these is always super important to me, since I’m usually the one behind the camera and rarely in pictures.  and Kristy nailed it.  the perfect combo of candid and posed shots.

I’ll be taking a little blog break between now and the new year to relax, play in the snow and spend time with family.  merry christmas, happy holidays and cheers to 2014, friends!!!

little things : decorating the tree + panache box

unruly things : decorating the tree | photos by Alyson Brown

last week we had quite a bit of snow in Bend, followed by ridiculously cold weather.  at one point during the night I reached over to check the weather app on my phone and it read -23 degrees.  so cold!!!  but we’d be determined to get our Christmas tree on Sunday so we bundled up and braved zero degree weather to pick out a tree.

Wolf was beyond excited.  he did more rearranging than helping last year, but this year he was such a big help.  he hung most of the ornaments at his height while we hung some up top.  and he’s so proud!  he keeps calling it “Wolf’s tree” with a huge smile on his face.

speaking of being bundled up, Wolf got to test out his newest flannel shirt for tree gettin’ and decoratin’, courtesy of the folks from Panache box.  have you heard of them?  it’s a super sweet company curating little boxes of clothing for kids.  I played around on their site, and it’s really fun.  you click through a series of pages and basically build a box of clothes for your child.  there’s great brands, too.  ESP No. 1 {one of my all time faves!}, Frank & Lu, Little Traveler and Woolrich, which is where Wolf’s cute flannel/hoodie combo shirt is from.  check it out!  it’s gifting made easy.

unruly things | gift guide : deck the halls

hooray for the 2013 gift guides!!!  this year we’re hosting Christmas in our house and I could not be more thrilled.  we’ve invited anyone in our family who can to spend Christmas with us.  in years past, I’ve never felt like I should really decorate a ton since we weren’t going to be here to enjoy it but this year I’m stoked to totally deck the halls.

when do you decorate for Christmas?  do you start before Thanksgiving?  wait until the turkey is finished?  or put it off until the last minute?  we’ll start decorating next week, as soon as we’re back in town from Thanksgiving in Idaho.

little things : H&M Halloween for kids

unruly things // little things : h&m halloween costumes

H&M just launched their Halloween collection for 2013 and it is beyond cute.  from skeletons and mermaids to the most perfect mini Marie Antoinette ever.  I can’t handle the overload of costume perfection.  H&M sent Wolf a little costume but you’ll have to wait until Halloween to see what he’ll be!  any guesses which one he picked?

pretty dang cute, right?  plus in addition to being so ridiculously adorable, for each costume sold 25% of the retail value will be donated to UNICEF’s projects to promote the rights of children in communities where H&M operates.

unruly things // curated for : uncommongoods

this year, we’re planning to spend Christmas at home – for the first time since Levi and I have been together!  I’m so excited.  we’ll get a big tree and host a big group at our home.  I created a little board of inspiration centered on dining and entertaining goodies from UncommonGoods to get me in a festive mood.  there’s so much goodness from UncommonGoods from barware to dinner plates to games and jewelry.  how fun are these pieces!?  wouldn’t you love to include them alongside your own holiday entertaining?  bonus – everything I picked is pretty generic so you could use them year-round!

one : birch dishware for making your tasty food look even prettier / two : diana camera for capturing every moment / three : granite cheese board for pre-dinner snacking / four : beer tasting flight for comparing / five : salt & pepper shakers / six : wood & ceramic tumblers for sipping in style / seven : stoneware growler to bring along your favorite hometown beer / eight : state apron to represent home / nine : a new deck of cards so you can play endless rounds of progressive rummy / ten : a cool car plate so the kids want no chance of skipping out on dinner

and psst… there’s a lovely little collection of holiday gifts for that lucky lady in your life.  check them out here!

wintery decor

every time December rolls around, I seem to find as many places in our home to use fresh cut fir, twinkling lights, rustic natural wood and bold red plaids.  then when December and the holidays have come and gone, I get sad taking all the “Christmasing” down.  we just got our tree this weekend and I made my first wreath.  now I’m dying for snow to make the holidays feel real.  and I’m wishing I could keep winter decor up all year round.
