family adventures made easy with Ergobaby and Orbit Baby

family adventure | photos by Alyson Brown in collaboration with Ergobaby & Orbit Baby for Unruly Things

over the weekend we went on a little family adventure to Dillon Falls, one of our favorite hiking spots along the Deschutes River. it’s just minutes outside of Bend and open year round when most other hikes are closed due to snow. it’s an easy hike and has incredibly rewarding views.

one of the most useful things in my opinion when hiking with a new baby is the Ergobaby carrier. we used one with Wolf from day one up until out grew it and wanted to run along side us on the hike. Ergobaby makes a handy infant insert to keep even the tiniest baby snug. it offers head and neck support for wobbly newborns and a pillow at the base of the insert to make sure they are ergonomically seated. and, it works with every carrier so you’ll never need anything different. my newest carrier is the Bundle of Joy package, which includes the carrier and insert – and makes a perfect gift for any expecting mama.

and since it seems that my babies always fall asleep in the carrier, the Ergo to carseat transfer needs to be smooth. enter the Orbit Baby infant carseat system. it’s incredible. the revolutionary SmartHub ring allows you to dock and harness the carseat from a sideways position – meaning, the carseat is facing you while you strap the baby in. then it rotates into the rear-facing position. so easy. I never thought I’d be so excited about a carseat!! but seriously – it’s a life changer.

our adventure to Crater Lake

Crater Lake Adventure | photos by Alyson Brown for Unruly Things

last weekend we took a spontaneous trip to Crater Lake. after living in Oregon for over 7 years, it was about time we made the adventure! it’s about a 2 hour drive from Bend and perfect for a day trip. at 36 weeks pregnant, it’s hard to know how much time we’ll have left for adventuring before this babe arrives, so we packed up a lunch and headed out mid morning.

I’d always pictured going to the lake would be just that. you show up, take a few photos and go home. I had no idea that you could take the 33 mile drive around the lake in it’s entirety, while taking in each stop and lookout along the way. so we spent the entire day exploring. and the views are breathtaking. these pictures just don’t even do it justice. we’ve had quite a few wildfires this summer so it was a bit of a bummer that we didn’t catch it on a super clear and sunny day, but you could still see how incredibly blue the water is.

if you’ve got an opportunity to make it to Crater Lake, I highly recommend. it’s one of those natural wonders that is just so magical, it should be on everyone’s bucket list.

scenes from our weekend : adventure to Todd Lake

bits of our weekend : adventure to Todd Lake | photos by Alyson Brown for Unruly Things over the weekend we headed to one of our very favorite nearby hikes – Todd Lake. I always describe this hike as magical because it’s just that. exciting for all ages, especially kiddos.

this time of year the wildflowers are in full bloom, which Wolf adores. and what’s even more exciting is that there are thousands of tadpoles in the lake. they’re illegal to take home, but plenty of fun to gently poke at and scoop into little hands to be put back into the water safely. we all wore our Tevas and waded around in the water which was a blast. next time I think we’ll take out bathing suits, at least one for Wolf since he was soaking wet by the end of the hike.

I definitely recommend Todd Lake to any newcomers or visitors to Bend. the views are outstanding and the hike is one of the best around.

WildCraft Studio

WildCraft Studio

WildCraft is a creative space in the Columbia River Gorge, right outside Portland, OR, offering classes, workshops and events to the public.  the genius behind WildCraft is my friend Chelsea Heffner, formerly of plainMADE.  WildCraft has a fantastic line up of workshops scheduled this summer such as Screenprinting 101, Weaving in the Wild and Natural Dyes from Weeds & Wilds.  they just made their Kickstarter goal to help fund the classes and I’m so excited for them!!  check out this beautiful video about WildCraft from their Kickstarter page.

if you’re in Portland, or anywhere near by for that matter, have a look at their schedule of courses and pick something out to attend!  Chelsea tells me they have plans for a late summer Wild Supper, a dinner party with vegetables from their garden and pizza from their own woodfired earth-oven, which I’m hoping to attend.  dreamy, right?  they also have an online shop and are printing limited edition prints for each of the workshops this summer.

52 weeks of Wolf : 19.52 + the view from 36 inches

52 weeks of Wolf : 19.52 / photo by Alyson Brown, Unruly Things

I’m excited to share with you two videos of Wolf today along with our usual weekly photo.  this past month, I partnered with Seventh Generation for their Campaign for a Toxin-Free Generation.  the campaign is designed to celebrate how liberating life can be without toxins, not only for us as parents but especially for those little guys.  you know, the ones that are 36 inches tall.

Seventh Generation offers truly effective home, body and baby care products that are free of parabens, 1,4-dioxane, or other concerning ingredients.  and if you’re a parent of a toddler, you know good and well that life can get pretty messy and involve lots of clean up.  it’s comforting to know that the products I’m using to clean our home {or Wolf for that matter} are safe and toxin-free.

Seventh Generation invited me to participate in their campaign and sent us a GoPro camera to get a glimpse of life from Wolf’s view at 36 inches.  we got outside.  we rode bikes rather than driving.  we let him get dirty.  and we lived toxin-free.  I hope you enjoy!

would you like to participate too?  post a video or photo of your kids being kids and Seventh Generation will donate $1 in your name to Women’s Voices for the Earth (WVE)*.  WVE strives to create a world in which everyone lives in a healthy environment, free from chemicals of concern. *up to $15,000

Mother’s Day event with Anthropologie

Unruly Things Mother’s Day event with Anthropologie #anthroevents

this past weekend, I hosted a Mother’s Day DIY event with Anthropologie in Portland.  we made kokedama string gardens with gorgeous orchids that I picked up from Portland Nursery.  the ladies at Anthropologie were amazing to work with!  the space set up for us was beautiful.  we had yummy treats to eat and even mimosas to sip on.  we had lots of fun making a pretty mess and getting our hands dirty making our kokedama.  all the attendees {25 ladies and 1 brave guy!} ended up with some beautiful kokedama to give to their mothers or hang in their own homes.
