cooking dinner with baby in tow

cooking with baby in tow | photos by Alyson Brown in collaboration with Ergobaby & Orbit Baby for Unruly Things

it’s a known fact around here. Orin simply sleeps better when he’s snuggled up against someone. but let’s face it – that isn’t always convenient, especially when dinner needs to be cooked! good thing there’s great baby carriers out there to allow you to be hands free.

many nights when Levi has to work late and Orin just wants to be held, I find myself strapping him in the Ergobaby wrap so that I can get a few things done around the kitchen. of course I’m careful when it comes to using the stove or the oven and often find myself doing the “side cooking move” that you see above while Orin sleeps away. one thing I’ve noticed about the Ergobaby wrap that I haven’t noticed with others is it’s stretchiness. it gives a really good bounce once you’ve got the baby all wrapped up! perfect for lulling them to sleep.

I’m making my very marinara sauce to top our pizza. it’s really easy so I thought I’d share below. enjoy!

MARINARA PIZZA SAUCE
makes approx 2 cups

28oz can of whole peeled tomatoes {I like the San Marzano brand best}
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp olive oil
1 onion, chopped
1 garlic clove
fresh oregano
fresh basil
dash of balsamic vinegar

add all ingredients together in a small sauce pan and bring to a boil. reduce heat and stir occasionally while breaking up the tomatoes. simmer 30-60 mins. using a submersion blender, puree everything together into a smooth sauce and enjoy over pizza with mozzarella, parmesan and oil cured olives. yum!

orin at two months

Orin at two months | photos by Alyson Brown for @unrulythings

oh this boy!! Orin has officially stolen my heart. he is such a sweet baby. and he smiles a LOT. as my mother in law said, he’s got a million dollar smile and I’d have to agree. last week he started playing with a few toys. the toy attachment on his bouncer and his jumper but this little ikea gym is one of his absolute favorites. {it was Wolf’s too!} the other night he was trying SO hard to grab it and got really frustrated because his arms were just out of reach. so I propped him up just a bit under my arms so that he could grab it and when he did – his face lit up in the biggest grin! you could just see how proud he was of him self. made me one happy mama. we really lucked out with him!

little things : orin’s space

little things : orin's space | photography by Alyson Brown for @unrulythings

when I was 17 weeks pregnant with Orin, I began sleeping in our guest room. once the bump started getting bigger, I was just plain uncomfortable sharing the queen sized bed with Levi. I was using three or four pillows for support and that just didn’t work. plus, we knew this would be the baby’s space once he arrived and I already planned on spending his first few months by his side.

I had many visions of how this space would come together. since this is a shared space, we didn’t want too many baby focused things but rather a simple coordinated look. ultimately the styling revolved around a beautiful vintage kantha blanket I found and it went from there. I just love how bright this space is! indigo blue is one of my very favorite colors and I had fun collecting things to go in the room.

Orin will eventually sleep in his crib but for now he’s sleeping in the moses basket, which was first Wolf’s! {side note – for those of you with more than one kiddo, how fun is it to see hand-me-downs used by your second child?} when he’s ready for his crib, we’ll probably move a twin sized bed into this tiny room so that it’s not jam packed. I hunted and hunted for a simple mobile but didn’t find anything that I liked, or could afford, so I decided to make my own inspired by one I’d found on Pinterest. it was super easy to make and lots of fun to put together. Wolf even helped!

we picked out the Babyletto changing table from Diapers.com since it converts to a dresser once you no longer need the changing portion. the natural wood works so well with the moses basket and I love it’s semi mid-century look. I can see it being in Orin’s room for awhile! the Serena & Lily flokati rug is also from Diapers.com. it’s super soft and cozy and just perfect for playtime.

now that the weather is getting cooler, we’ve been spending a lot of time snuggling in warm knits and under cozy blankets. I got this amazing ace & jig duster from the folks at Accompany. it’s simply perfect for lazy mornings.

little things : one of our favorite books

little things : telephone, by Mac Barnett | photos by Alyson Brown for Unruly Things

every night we read stories to Wolf. he gets to pick out 4. Wolf has a TON of stories but there’s a few that ALWAYS make the cut – no matter what. it seems like we read those over and over so it helps when it’s one that both kiddo and parent enjoy. Telephone is one of them. it’s an adorable story by Mac Barnett with a little twist on the classic game of telephone, except this time Peter the Pigeon’s Mother wants him to come home for dinner. the message gets sent down a telephone wire by a silly group of birds. I like to read each bird’s character in a different voice and it cracks Wolf up every time. if you get a chance to check out Telephone and other books by Mac, you won’t be disappointed. Mac’s stories are fantastic. we’re also digging his latest – Sam and Dave Dig a Hole.

family adventures made easy with Ergobaby and Orbit Baby

family adventure | photos by Alyson Brown in collaboration with Ergobaby & Orbit Baby for Unruly Things

over the weekend we went on a little family adventure to Dillon Falls, one of our favorite hiking spots along the Deschutes River. it’s just minutes outside of Bend and open year round when most other hikes are closed due to snow. it’s an easy hike and has incredibly rewarding views.

one of the most useful things in my opinion when hiking with a new baby is the Ergobaby carrier. we used one with Wolf from day one up until out grew it and wanted to run along side us on the hike. Ergobaby makes a handy infant insert to keep even the tiniest baby snug. it offers head and neck support for wobbly newborns and a pillow at the base of the insert to make sure they are ergonomically seated. and, it works with every carrier so you’ll never need anything different. my newest carrier is the Bundle of Joy package, which includes the carrier and insert – and makes a perfect gift for any expecting mama.

and since it seems that my babies always fall asleep in the carrier, the Ergo to carseat transfer needs to be smooth. enter the Orbit Baby infant carseat system. it’s incredible. the revolutionary SmartHub ring allows you to dock and harness the carseat from a sideways position – meaning, the carseat is facing you while you strap the baby in. then it rotates into the rear-facing position. so easy. I never thought I’d be so excited about a carseat!! but seriously – it’s a life changer.

little things : hanna andersson

little things : hanna andersson | photos by Alyson Brown in collaboration with Hanna Andersson and Unruly Things

if there’s one thing I LOVE about dressing boys, it’s dressing them in stripes. and now that I have two boys, matching stripes is even cuter. we’ve always been big fans of the clothing from Hanna Andersson – a Portland-based children’s company with Swedish roots. we especially love the pjs. they’re super soft, come in perfect colors and they’re 100% pure organic cotton. so when they offered to send us some matching pjs for Orin and Wolf, naturally I couldn’t have been more thrilled and had a lot of fun snapping photos of these two sweet boys.

if you haven’t heard of Hanna Andersson, check out their site as well as on Facebook and Instagram, too.
