little things : one of our favorite books

little things : telephone, by Mac Barnett | photos by Alyson Brown for Unruly Things

every night we read stories to Wolf. he gets to pick out 4. Wolf has a TON of stories but there’s a few that ALWAYS make the cut – no matter what. it seems like we read those over and over so it helps when it’s one that both kiddo and parent enjoy. Telephone is one of them. it’s an adorable story by Mac Barnett with a little twist on the classic game of telephone, except this time Peter the Pigeon’s Mother wants him to come home for dinner. the message gets sent down a telephone wire by a silly group of birds. I like to read each bird’s character in a different voice and it cracks Wolf up every time. if you get a chance to check out Telephone and other books by Mac, you won’t be disappointed. Mac’s stories are fantastic. we’re also digging his latest – Sam and Dave Dig a Hole.

family adventures made easy with Ergobaby and Orbit Baby

family adventure | photos by Alyson Brown in collaboration with Ergobaby & Orbit Baby for Unruly Things

over the weekend we went on a little family adventure to Dillon Falls, one of our favorite hiking spots along the Deschutes River. it’s just minutes outside of Bend and open year round when most other hikes are closed due to snow. it’s an easy hike and has incredibly rewarding views.

one of the most useful things in my opinion when hiking with a new baby is the Ergobaby carrier. we used one with Wolf from day one up until out grew it and wanted to run along side us on the hike. Ergobaby makes a handy infant insert to keep even the tiniest baby snug. it offers head and neck support for wobbly newborns and a pillow at the base of the insert to make sure they are ergonomically seated. and, it works with every carrier so you’ll never need anything different. my newest carrier is the Bundle of Joy package, which includes the carrier and insert – and makes a perfect gift for any expecting mama.

and since it seems that my babies always fall asleep in the carrier, the Ergo to carseat transfer needs to be smooth. enter the Orbit Baby infant carseat system. it’s incredible. the revolutionary SmartHub ring allows you to dock and harness the carseat from a sideways position – meaning, the carseat is facing you while you strap the baby in. then it rotates into the rear-facing position. so easy. I never thought I’d be so excited about a carseat!! but seriously – it’s a life changer.

little things : hanna andersson

if there’s one thing I LOVE about dressing boys, it’s dressing them in stripes. and now that I have two boys, matching stripes is even cuter. we’ve always been big fans of the clothing from Hanna Andersson – a Portland-based children’s company with Swedish roots. we especially love the pjs. they’re super soft, come in perfect colors and they’re 100% pure organic cotton. so when they offered to send us some matching pjs for Orin and Wolf, naturally I couldn’t have been more thrilled and had a lot of fun snapping photos of these two sweet boys.

if you haven’t heard of Hanna Andersson, check out their site as well as on Facebook and Instagram, too.

little things : Orin’s first bath

Unruly Things for Seventh Generation

last week we gave Orin his much belated first bath, one day short of him turning a month old!! time seriously flew by. his expression as we dunked his little body into his warm little tub was priceless! but just like his big brother, he loves the water. he was definitely confused at first but was soon totally into it and his face showed it. we lathered him up with our favorite baby wash from Seventh Generation on a super soft wash cloth. we’ve been using Seventh Generation soap for Wolf for as long as I can remember and have really enjoyed it – especially the bubble bath!

needless to say, Orin’s first bath was a big hit. even big brother got to help! he sat on the counter and sang songs for Orin. it was pretty sweet.

say hello to Orin Otto

this handsome little fellow entered our lives in the wee hours of the morning on September 22 after a speedy labor. {more on that soon!} he weighed in at 8lbs even and measured 21 inches long. we’re so in love with this new guy, especially his big brother. Wolf has settled right into the role of big bro seamlessly and gives Orin a million hugs and kisses every day.

new adventures ahead! in the mean time – we’re snuggling Orin and taking in every second.

mama things : life at 30+ weeks

unruly things | 30 weeks pregnant

tomorrow I’ll be 31 weeks pregnant. I can’t really say I’ve got much to complain about aside from just feeling very pregnant. and HOT! darn those 90+ degree days.

second pregnancies are so funny. and it’s so true what they say about the second baby not getting as much attention as the first. remember last time, when I took a picture of my bump every week? this time around I’ve hardly taken any. time has been flying by. plus, I haven’t been feeling especially cute this time. I started off a few pounds heavier than I did with Wolf, so already I was feeling larger. with second and subsequent pregnancies, you start to notice your bump {or bloat as I’d like to call it} sooner due to familiarity within the body so I’ve felt large the whole time. plus, this boy is hanging out right around my lungs and rib cage, making breathing, standing for too long or walking up stairs tough and all I’ve wanted to wear are my maternity shorts that have that giant belly band for extra support. but I finally got Levi to snap a few pictures of me this past weekend on our neighborhood walk. and surprisingly, I was limber and stable enough to get up on that rock. ;)

here’s to spending the rest of the summer getting bigger and rounder! and deciding on a name. this little guy is still totally nameless.

little things : our favorite summer clothes

little things : our favorite summer clothes | unruly things

lately Wolf has spent almost every waking second playing outside in the backyard. it’s almost summer and it sure feels like it. he runs around bare foot, sprays the hose, helps me water the plants, hunts for four {and five!} leaf clovers, ants & flowers, and just has a blast being a kid. since he’s outside a lot, I like to pick comfy clothes for him that are still stylish but can take a beating. one of my very favorite brands is Nico Nico. the clothes are made with the softest organic cotton you can imagine and fit great. I’ve enjoyed many of their past seasons but I must say, this Spring/Summer collection is one of my very faves. with the combos of bright colors, indigo dyes & stripes and camo, you can’t ask for much better. have a peek here.
